Importing Commercial Laundry Machines from China: A Guide for Laundries & Hotels

Saudi Arabia's commercial laundry sector is growing strongly alongside the expansion of hotels, hospitals, restaurants, and linen companies. Commercial laundry washers, industrial dryers, and flatwork ironers are heavy machines that run for long hours daily, making their selection a sensitive investment decision. China offers a wide range of this equipment with specifications that rival European brands at far lower prices, but successful importing requires a precise understanding of electrical specs, certifications, and after-sales service. This guide explains all of it.

Why Import from China?

Over the past two decades, Chinese factories have developed high-quality commercial washer production lines, many of which actually manufacture for well-known global brands (OEM). The price gap can reach half that of European imports, with flexibility in capacity and customization: drum capacity (in kilograms), heating type (electric, steam, or gas), and control system. Integrated laundry lines are also available for large projects, making it easy to equip a full laundry from a single source.

Where in China? Manufacturing Regions

Commercial laundry equipment manufacturing is concentrated in specific clusters:

  • Jiangsu Province and the Taizhou area: One of China's largest hubs for industrial laundry washers and dryers.
  • Shanghai and surrounding areas: Strong in high-spec equipment and integrated laundry systems for hotels and hospitals.
  • Guangdong (Guangzhou): Wide variety in equipment and control components, and proximity to ports eases exporting.

Inspecting the factory firsthand reveals the quality of the stainless steel and the suspension system that determines washer stability during high-speed spin.

Critical Specs and Technical Mistakes

Mistakes here are costly because they involve heavy equipment that is hard to replace:

  • Voltage and frequency: Ensure the machine is compatible with the Saudi grid (380V / 3-phase / 60Hz). Frequency is a very common error, as much Chinese equipment is designed for 50Hz.
  • Heating system: Choose between electric, steam, and gas depending on your available energy source and operating cost. Steam is more economical for large projects.
  • Drum material: Require 304 stainless steel for the inner and outer drum to resist corrosion from detergents.
  • Mounting type: Rigid-mount washers are cheaper but need a concrete foundation, while soft-mount washers install on a normal floor. Decide this before ordering.
  • Programmability: Request a programmable control system with a clear interface, ideally with Arabic language support.
Common mistake: neglecting utility requirements (water, drainage, electricity, steam). Ask the factory for an installation layout before purchase to prepare the site in advance.

Certification and Compliance in Saudi Arabia

Heavy electrical equipment falls strictly under Saudi Standards (SASO) requirements via the SABER platform and needs a Certificate of Conformity plus CE and ISO certificates before clearing the ports of Jeddah or Dammam. Request full technical documentation and the operating manual. Gas-powered equipment is subject to additional safety requirements. Factor customs duties and 15% VAT into the project budget.

Warranty, Spare Parts, and Installation

This is the most important aspect of heavy equipment. Agree in writing on a warranty of at least one to two years, and request a spare-parts package: bearings, belts, valves, and heating elements. Failures in these parts halt the entire laundry, and a delayed part from China can cost you days of downtime. Ensure remote technical support is available, a clear maintenance manual exists, and ideally work with a supplier that stocks spare parts locally.

Quantities and Rough Costs

The minimum order quantity (MOQ) is often a single unit for large equipment, but pricing improves significantly when equipping a full line. As a rough reference: a commercial 20 to 30 kg washer starts around SAR 12,000 to 25,000, and a comparable industrial dryer from SAR 8,000 to 18,000, depending on specs and heating system. Sea freight is best suited to the equipment's weight, factoring in insurance, clearance, and installation costs.

Terrace International, with its team in Guangzhou and Riyadh, handles trusted factory selection, verifying equipment compatibility with the Saudi grid, pre-shipment quality inspection, securing spare parts and technical support, and managing shipping, clearance, and installation.
