Importing Garden & Outdoor Furniture from China
Jun 16, 2026
Garden and outdoor furniture is a profitable seasonal market in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, booming as winter cools and cafés and restaurants open their outdoor areas, and as villa and rest-house projects expand. But the real challenge is not buying — it is choosing a product that survives the scorching Gulf sun, the coastal humidity of Jeddah and Dammam, and sandstorms. Poor outdoor furniture fades and cracks within a single summer and turns into returns that eat your profit. This guide focuses on what makes this category genuinely different from indoor furniture.
Where to buy in China
Outdoor-furniture factories cluster in specific regions, and knowing them saves you weeks of searching:
- Foshan and Zhongshan in Guangdong — major hubs for synthetic rattan and metal garden sets.
- Ningbo — strong in outdoor umbrellas, aluminium furniture and swings.
- Guangzhou — premium majlis sets and water-resistant upholstered outdoor furniture.
Terrace International's proximity in Guangzhou allows on-site visits and a direct comparison of several suppliers in a single day, rather than relying on photos alone.
The right material is everything
Garden furniture lives or dies by its raw material before anything else. Specifically request:
- PE (HDPE) rattan, not PVC: high-density polyethylene rattan is UV-resistant, while cheap PVC cracks and fades fast under our sun.
- Aluminium over iron: frames must be powder-coated aluminium or galvanised steel; plain iron rusts within months in coastal humidity.
- Water-resistant fabrics: insist on Olefin or Textilene cushions with quick-dry foam and drainage holes that stop water pooling.
- Tempered glass for table tops, to prevent breakage under direct sun heat.
- Stainless steel hardware: insist on stainless steel screws and hinges, not coated iron — rust usually starts at the bolts before it ever reaches the frame.
Always request a UV resistance test report — at least 1,000 hours. This is the difference between a product that lasts years and one that fades in a single summer.
Common quality mistakes and certification
Focus inspection on: weld quality in metal frames (weak weld points break under weight), even rattan weaving with no protruding ends, colour consistency across the whole batch (colour variation is one of the biggest outdoor-furniture problems), and powder-coat adhesion via a scratch test. Ask for a sample and leave it in the sun for a week before approving a large order. On the regulatory side, garden furniture usually needs a SABER certificate and a shipment certificate of conformity before clearance at Jeddah or Dammam, and fabrics and foam may require additional safety reports. Build customs duty and 15% VAT into your cost.
Seasonal shipping and quantities
Timing is the most critical factor in this category. Peak season in the Gulf is autumn and winter (October–March). Production takes 30–45 days and sea freight 25–35 days, meaning your order must start in July–August for stock to arrive before the season. Whoever is late misses the season and is stuck with dead inventory for a full year. On quantities and packaging:
- Outdoor furniture is highly volumetric; order stackable or knock-down designs to raise the pieces per container and cut per-unit shipping cost.
- MOQ for rattan sets is usually 20–50 sets per model.
- Insist on moisture-resistant packaging with silica gel — long sea freight exposes metal and foam to mould if packaging is poor.
- Bundle umbrellas, accessories and spare cushions with sets to lift average basket value and margin.
Pick designs that sell in your market
Do not import only what you like, but what the Saudi market actually wants. Demand today leans toward neutral colours — grey, beige and black — that suit modern villas and cafés, and toward modular sets that can be rearranged to fit different spaces. Ask the factory for its latest seasonal catalogues, and study the best-sellers on Noon and Amazon.sa before you lock your model selection. Test one or two designs in a small first order, watch how fast they turn over, then reorder the winners in larger volumes. Always remember: one successful set that sells quickly beats ten slow-moving models that freeze your capital and clog your warehouse.
