Importing Living Room Furniture and Sofas from China

Sofas and living room sets are among the most profitable furniture categories in the Saudi market, but they are also the bulkiest to ship and the most sensitive on quality. A single sofa can look stunning in a supplier photo while its inner frame hides damp timber or low-density foam that collapses within a year. This guide explains how to import living room furniture from China so that sturdy pieces arrive, clear customs smoothly, and satisfy your Gulf customer.

Why China is the ideal source

China brings timber, foam, fabric, and mechanism supply chains under one roof, giving you enormous design variety from gilded classical to upholstered modern, at competitive prices with flexible customization. You can request a specific fabric color, a recliner mechanism, or dimensions suited to Saudi majlis seating, all within a single container.

Where to source in China

Foshan in Guangdong is the undisputed furniture capital, specifically the Lecong market, the largest cluster of furniture showrooms in the world. There you find upholstered sofa factories and complete living room sets. For solid wood furniture and tables, nearby Dongguan is a specialist. We always advise visiting the actual factory, not just the showroom, because many Lecong showrooms are trading outlets buying from back-end factories of uneven quality.

Quality control pitfalls to watch

The inner frame is the foundation of durability, and it is exactly what you cannot see in a photo. Insist on kiln-dried hardwood for the load-bearing frame, and reject particleboard at stress points because it disintegrates with use.

  • Foam density: no less than 30 kg/m3 for seat cushions, with a slow-recovery comfort layer.
  • Stitching and upholstery: check seam straightness, fabric pattern alignment, and the strength of corner stitching.
  • Mechanism: for recliners and motion sofas, request a cycle test on hinges to confirm durability.
  • Flammability: upholstery fabric must pass the fire-resistance requirements for home furniture.

Certifications and Saudi compliance

Living room furniture falls under the SABER system operated by SASO, and you need a Product Certificate of Conformity and a Shipment CoC before clearance. Keep test reports for the fabrics (flammability and restricted substances) and for the wood finishes (freedom from heavy metals). All domestic sales carry 15% VAT through the ZATCA platform, so build it into your pricing margin from the start.

Shipping, volumetric weight and handling

Bulky furniture is charged by volumetric, not actual, weight, so the way a sofa is shipped determines your profitability. Ask the factory for knock-down furniture wherever possible, so legs and backs detach and ship flat, doubling the number of pieces per container. When knock-down is not possible, require multi-layer packing: perimeter foam, reinforced corners, and double-wall cartons, because any friction in the container tears the upholstery. Sofas are a fragile, scratch-prone category, so never economize on packing. Use a 40-foot high-cube container (40HQ) and plan piece layout for optimal loading.

MOQ, costs and common mistakes

Foshan manufacturers often accept a mixed container of several models rather than a high MOQ per model, which is ideal for showrooms testing the market. The costliest mistake is buying from a showroom without confirming the real factory, followed by skipping the inner-frame inspection by opening the base of a production sample, then accepting weak packing that arrives scratched. The fourth mistake is ignoring color consistency between the first lot and full production, so always request an approved fabric Lab Dip and lock it as a reference.

Open the base of the sofa and check the wood yourself; the inner frame decides whether the piece lasts ten years or collapses in one.

At Terrace International, our Guangzhou team visits the actual Foshan factories, opens production samples to inspect wood, foam, and mechanisms, supervises packing and knock-down for shipping, and manages the SABER file and clearance in Jeddah and Dammam.
