Importing Smart Door Locks from China to Saudi Arabia: The Complete Guide
Jun 30, 2026
In Saudi Arabia, the smart lock has moved from a techie's luxury to near-standard equipment: property developers fit them in new apartments as a selling point, short-term rental hosts rely on them for remote check-in, small hotels run them on central management systems, and families want them on villa and rest-house doors. With Chinese factory prices starting at a few dozen dollars for a product that retails locally for hundreds of riyals, the opportunity looks irresistible — but between a lock that works flawlessly for five years and one that strands a tenant outside their own door lie technical details you must master before your first container.
Why China Leads the Smart Lock Industry
China is the world's largest producer of smart locks, where precision mechanics converge with electronics, biometrics, and wireless connectivity. The major factories build for global brands and offer full OEM programmes with your branding and a customised app. The variety is enormous: fingerprint, PIN code, RFID card, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, smart-home integrations, and hotel systems with central management software.
Where They Are Made
- Xiaolan, Zhongshan: China's historic lock town, the largest cluster of mechanical and smart lock factories.
- Shenzhen: technically advanced locks, fingerprint modules, cameras, connectivity, and apps.
- Wenzhou and Yongkang (Zhejiang): well-known hardware clusters for lock components.
Specs That Decide Success in the Saudi Market
- Local door compatibility: the single most important point. Saudi door and mortise dimensions differ from Chinese norms, and many Chinese locks are designed for thinner doors. Verify the mortise size, the supported door thickness (typically 40–120 mm in the local market), and installability on wooden, steel, and aluminium doors.
- Heat tolerance: an exterior door in Riyadh gets scorching in summer — confirm the operating temperature range of the fingerprint reader, display, and battery.
- Battery and emergencies: 6–12 months of battery life, an external USB-C emergency port, and a mechanical backup key are non-negotiable.
- Arabic support: the app and voice prompts must fully support Arabic.
- Encryption and security: ask about communication encryption and fingerprint anti-spoofing — your brand's reputation rests on them.
- For hotels and serviced apartments: central management, RFID cards, and integration with hotel management systems.
Approvals and Customs
- SABER: product registration and conformity certificates are mandatory for clearance.
- CST approval: for locks connecting over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth — which is most of them.
- UN38.3: for lithium batteries when air freighting; some locks run on standard alkaline cells and avoid this file entirely.
- RoHS and durability test reports strengthen your case with property developers.
Customs duty is around 5% and VAT is 15%. Sea freight through Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam takes approximately 18 to 30 days.
Prices and Margins
- Entry smart lock (PIN + card + fingerprint): approximately USD 24 to 53 (SAR 90–200) ex-factory, retailing at SAR 400–800.
- Advanced lock with Wi-Fi, app, and camera: approximately USD 67 to 147 (SAR 250–550), retailing at SAR 900–2,000.
- Hotel RFID lock with management system: approximately USD 32 to 75 (SAR 120–280) per unit at project volumes.
- MOQ: usually 50 to 200 pieces, with clear cost breaks above 500.
Note that installation and after-sales service are part of the product here: importers who build a network of installation technicians sell to developers on contracts, not by the piece.
Common Mistakes
Importing locks that do not fit local door dimensions and watching them pile up in the warehouse; skipping heat testing for exterior doors; neglecting CST approval; buying locks with a weak app that has no updates and no Arabic; failing to secure long-term spare-parts and firmware support from the factory; and overlooking the mechanical backup key missing on some cheap models. Every one of these turns a trust product into a liability.
Golden rule: a smart lock is a trust product — run the sample on a real Saudi door through a full summer month before ordering your first container.
