Importing Tires from China to Saudi Arabia: Quality, Approvals, and Margins
Mar 16, 2026
The Saudi tire market is one of the largest automotive aftermarkets in the region — a function of a huge vehicle fleet, long intercity distances, and asphalt temperatures that wear tires down faster than almost anywhere else. Good-tier Chinese tires have become an accepted choice for transport companies, fleets, and budget-conscious drivers, and the price gap versus Japanese and European brands leaves the trader a healthy margin — on one condition: you must know how to tell a serious factory from one selling rubber that will not survive a single summer on the Riyadh–Dammam highway.
Why China in the Tire Industry
China is the world's biggest tire producer, home to rising brands with real Gulf presence such as Triangle, Linglong, and Sailun, alongside dozens of factories producing private labels for traders. The range covers passenger car radials (PCR), truck and bus radials (TBR), off-the-road tires (OTR) for heavy equipment, and desert-oriented patterns — letting you build a complete assortment from one or two suppliers.
Where They Are Made: The Shandong Belt
- Shandong province: the heart of Chinese tire manufacturing — particularly Qingdao, Dongying, and Guangrao county, which hosts an exceptional concentration of plants.
- Qingdao: the main export hub, tire fair venue, and base for the big trading houses.
- Additional specialised factories operate in Jiangsu and Guangdong.
Many of the offers reaching you online come from Qingdao trading companies, not factories, and the difference in both price and spec discipline is substantial. An on-the-ground audit is what reveals who you are really dealing with.
Quality Specifications That Protect Your Reputation
- Production date (DOT): the Saudi market is extremely sensitive to tire age, and local requirements restrict how old a tire may be at sale. Contractually require fresh production — ideally under six months old at shipment — and refuse any aged stock.
- Heat resistance: specify a rubber compound suited to Gulf climate and verify the treadwear, traction, and temperature grades.
- Load and speed ratings: match load and speed indices to real usage, especially for truck tires carrying heavy loads in summer.
- Random-sample visual inspection: bulges, sidewall cracks, and inner-liner defects are caught by a pre-shipment inspection, not after the container lands.
SASO, SABER, and Regulatory Requirements
Tires are governed by a mandatory technical regulation in Saudi Arabia. No shipment clears customs without a conformity certificate issued through the SABER platform against the relevant Gulf standards, plus the approved tire efficiency label. Confirm that the factory is registered with an accredited conformity body and has a track record of exporting to Saudi Arabia — a plant with no Gulf export history will cost you time and painful clearance lessons. Factor in customs duty of approximately 5% and 15% VAT.
Container Economics and Approximate Prices
- A 40ft high-cube container holds roughly 900–1,200 passenger tires depending on size, or around 220–280 truck tires.
- Approximate ex-factory prices: popular passenger sizes run about USD 15–32 each; TBR truck tires roughly USD 130–240 depending on size and brand.
- MOQ: usually one full container, with mixed sizes and models negotiable within a single box.
- Sea freight: approximately 18–30 days to Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam.
Mistakes Tire Importers Keep Making
Accepting aged stock at a tempting discount only to find the market rejects it; overlooking the efficiency-label requirement and stalling the shipment; padding the container with slow-moving sizes; contracting a middleman who switches factories between shipments so quality fluctuates; and skipping cargo insurance even though tires are vulnerable to heat and poor storage. Each of these has turned a profitable deal into a loss for someone before you.
Golden rule: in the tire business, the production date is part of the specification, not a detail — write it into the contract with a penalty clause and check it before the container is loaded.
The Terrace International field team based in Guangzhou and Shenzhen verifies tire factories in Shandong and beyond, negotiates prices and production dates, inspects shipments before loading, and manages SABER certification and freight through to your port of arrival.
